The Wisdom of God
The Second Pillar of SWAGGER
Walking Worthy Through Divine Wisdom
By Pamela D. Rodgers · July 28, 2026
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
— James 1:5 (NKJV)
The world celebrates intelligence, education, achievement, and experience. While these are valuable gifts from God, they are not the same as the Wisdom of God.
Knowledge may tell us what is true.
Understanding helps us grasp why it is true.
Skill enables us to apply truth effectively.
Discernment enables us to recognize the difference between truth and error, righteousness and sin, God's voice and the voice of the world.
But wisdom brings them all together. It is the God-given ability to rightly apply His truth in everyday life for His glory.
The believer who walks in the Wisdom of God does not simply know Scripture — they live it.
Section 1
What Is the Wisdom of God?
The Wisdom of God is His perfect perspective, revealed through His Word and applied by the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to make decisions that honor Him. God's wisdom is eternal because God Himself is eternal.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."
— Proverbs 9:10 (NKJV)
Notice the progression:
- ✦Reverence for God produces wisdom.
- ✦Knowing God produces understanding.
Biblical wisdom is relational before it is intellectual. One may possess extensive knowledge and yet lack wisdom because wisdom begins with submission to God.
The Four Building Blocks of Godly Wisdom
Knowledge
Knowledge is learning God's truth.
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…" — Hosea 4:6 (NKJV)
Knowledge answers: What does God say?
Understanding
Understanding connects God's truth together.
"Incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding." — Proverbs 2:2 (NKJV)
Understanding answers: Why does God say it?
Skill
Skill is the practical application of God's truth. Just as Bezalel was filled with wisdom and skill to build the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:1–5), believers are called to skillfully apply God's Word in every area of life.
Skill answers: How do I live this out?
Discernment
Discernment enables believers to distinguish truth from deception.
"Solid food belongs to those who are of full age… who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." — Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)
Discernment answers: What is pleasing to God?
When Knowledge, Understanding, Skill, and Discernment work together under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the result is biblical wisdom.
Section 2
God's Wisdom Versus the World's Wisdom
The world says…
- ✦Follow your heart.
- ✦Trust yourself.
- ✦Pride
- ✦Self-promotion
- ✦Popularity
- ✦Power
- ✦Temporary success
God says…
- ✦The heart is deceitful above all things.
- ✦Trust in the Lord with all your heart.
- ✦Humility
- ✦Holiness
- ✦Servanthood
- ✦Obedience
- ✦Eternal reward
"For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God."
— 1 Corinthians 3:19 (NKJV)
James describes worldly wisdom as "earthly, sensual, demonic" (James 3:15). But God's wisdom is altogether different:
"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy."
— James 3:17 (NKJV)
One wisdom produces confusion. The other produces peace.
One exalts self. The other glorifies Christ.
Section 3
How Do We Obtain the Wisdom of God?
God never intended His children to navigate life apart from His wisdom. He invites us to seek it diligently.
Ask God
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…"
— James 1:5 (NKJV)
God delights in giving wisdom to those who sincerely seek Him.
Study God's Word
"Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path."
— Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)
The Scriptures are God's primary source of wisdom.
Walk with the Holy Spirit
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth."
— John 16:13 (NKJV)
The Spirit not only teaches us truth but helps us apply it.
Fear the Lord
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."
— Proverbs 9:10 (NKJV)
Holy reverence positions our hearts to receive divine wisdom.
Seek God Daily
"Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…"
— Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
Wisdom grows through daily fellowship with God.
Section 4
The Advantages of Possessing the Wisdom of God
God's wisdom affects every area of life. It provides:
Direction
Proverbs 3:5–6
God directs the paths of those who trust Him.
Protection
Ecclesiastes 7:12
Wisdom often protects us from unnecessary pain caused by foolish decisions.
Discernment
Godly wisdom enables believers to recognize false teaching, temptation, and deception before becoming entangled in them.
Peace
Proverbs 3:17
Wisdom produces confidence because it rests in God rather than circumstances.
Spiritual Maturity
Wise believers increasingly resemble Christ in both character and conduct.
The Disadvantages of Rejecting God's Wisdom
Scripture repeatedly warns against rejecting wisdom. Without God's wisdom:
- ✦Decisions become driven by emotions instead of truth.
- ✦Deception becomes easier to believe.
- ✦Sin appears attractive.
- ✦Pride replaces humility.
- ✦Relationships suffer.
- ✦Spiritual growth stagnates.
- ✦Fellowship with God weakens.
"There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death."
— Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV)
The greatest danger of rejecting wisdom is not simply making poor choices — it is drifting away from God's will.
Walking Worthy
The Wisdom of God is more than information; it is transformation. Through the Holy Spirit, God shapes our minds to think according to His truth, our hearts to desire what pleases Him, and our lives to reflect the character of Christ. Wisdom teaches us not merely to ask, "What do I want?" but "What honors God?"
As believers, we are called to pursue wisdom with humility, recognizing that every decision becomes an opportunity to glorify the Lord. Walking worthy means choosing God's perspective over the world's, trusting His Word above our own understanding, and allowing His wisdom to direct every step we take.
The believer who walks in God's wisdom will not walk perfectly, but they will walk purposefully — guided by the One who knows the end from the beginning.
Self-Examination
Take a moment to examine your heart before the Lord.
Do I seek God's wisdom before making important decisions, or do I rely primarily on my own understanding?
Am I growing in biblical knowledge, understanding, skill, and discernment, or have I become spiritually complacent?
Are my choices shaped more by God's Word or by the values and opinions of the world?
Can others see evidence of heavenly wisdom through my humility, peace, gentleness, and integrity?
In what area of my life is God inviting me to trust His wisdom instead of my own?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the source of all true wisdom. Forgive me for the times I have leaned on my own understanding rather than trusting in Your perfect ways. Fill my heart with a holy reverence for You, and teach me to seek Your wisdom above every earthly pursuit. Increase my knowledge of Your Word, deepen my understanding of Your truth, strengthen my skill in living out Your commands, and sharpen my discernment so that I may recognize what is pleasing in Your sight.
By the power of Your Holy Spirit, help me to reject the wisdom of this world and embrace the wisdom that comes from above — pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy, and rich in good fruit. May every decision I make, every word I speak, and every step I take reflect the mind of Christ and bring glory to Your name.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
